Abstract
The efficiency of solar power generator requires several parameters to optimize the produced energy. This study is conducted to assess and analyze potential areas for solar photovoltaic (PV) installation based on insolation pattern derived from LiDAR imagery. The main source of electricity in Malaysia is primarily generated from natural fossil fuels such as coal, oil or natural gases which contribute to some negative impacts toward the environment. Solar PV technology is an effective solution to reduce environmental effects and utility cost. This study is significant to create awareness among Malaysian citizen on the utilization of solar power while testing the reliability of LiDAR data in modeling the insolation pattern for the entire year of 2018. The approach of this study comprises three main stages; starting with the analysis on the aspect and slope of topographic and man-made structures, the insolation pattern per month and year 2018 and the determination of potential rooftop areas for solar PV installation. The final output of this study is the map of potential areas for solar PV installation on rooftops with specific aspect and slope.
