Abstract
This chapter sheds light on detailed theoretical debates on the issue of urbanization and urban poverty. In the first half of the chapter, the meaning of different concepts such as urban, urbanism, urbanized and urbanization have been discussed. The second half of the chapter deals with the meaning of poverty and urban poverty, followed by a discussion on the historical perspectives of urban poverty. Thereafter, different theories of poverty, including social transformation theory, functionalist theory, and conflict theory, have been discussed. Finally, the urban poverty debate in different parts of the world has been discussed.
