Abstract

Jivanputra (Putranjiva roxburghii Wall.) is a moderate-sized tree. It is an evergreen tree belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae. It is a most popular medicinal plant. Its branches are pendent, and its bark are dark gray in color. It is useful in treating female infertility. This improves female fertility, thus useful in conception. It is in our Ayurvedic texts as an antirheumatic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory herb. Its various part contains many glucoputranjivin, glycosides glucojiaputin, glucocochlearin and saponins, glucocleomin, flavonoids, and triterpenes. The main constituents are isopropyl and 2-butyl isothiocyanates. 2-Methylbutyl isothiocyanate comes in the category of minor component. This has high level of antihyperglycemic and analgesic power. This has significant cytotoxicity. This contains many active phytochemicals in seeds which shows its protectant capacity against various diseases. This has high level of antibacterial, antifungal, insect repellent, and grain protectant power. It is an alternative of fuel. The essential oil obtained from seed has protective potential for storage of Dalbergia sissoo seeds.
