The Blast Damage Factor D

Abstract

Practical experience in the design of rock slope projects has demonstrated that the estimated rock mass strength of a given slope is affected by the blast damage in slope excavations. In order to improve the accuracy of rock mass strength prediction under blast conditions, a blast damage factor D, also known as the disturbance factor, was introduced in the Hoek-Brown criterion to calculate the HB input parameters and strength and deformation modulus of rock masses. The value of D varies from zero for undisturbed rock masses to one for highly disturbed rock masses according to disturbance conditions caused by blast damage as well as stress relief. Guidelines for estimating disturbance factor D for the tunnel and slope application were presented. Some preliminary guidelines as a starting point for the determination of the thickness of the blast damage zone as a result of production blast were also presented.
