Abstract

This chapter deals mainly with the marine cnidarian envenomations and their treatment and management. The different aspects relating to envenomations include the components of venom apparatus (nematocysts, spirocysts and ptychocysts); mechanism of cnidae discharge; characteristics and composition of marine cnidarian venoms viz. enzymes, pore-forming toxins, neurotoxins (voltage-gated ion channel toxins) and non-protein bioactive components; major stinging marine cnidarian species and Irukandji syndrome; and globally recorded jellyfish stings. The aspect treatment and management of marine cnidarian envenomations of this chapter includes therapeutic approaches to injuries caused by sea anemone stings. Furthermore, the therapeutic potential of venom of marine cnidarians, role of cnidarian venoms in drug discovery and cnidarian venoms possessing therapeutic activities are also dealt with in this chapter.
