Abstract

Novel design of rectangular microstrip antenna inserted with rectangular slot pair on one of the antenna edges and modified circular and rectangular slots cut rectangular strip backed by closed wall ground plane is proposed for circular polarized response. The introduction of modified circular and rectangular slot cut rectangular strip introduces orthogonal resonant modes around the TM01 mode of equivalent E-shape microstrip antenna which yields circular polarized response. The closed wall ground plane helps in realizing required impedance matching at orthogonal resonant modes. In 900 MHz frequency spectrum, proposed design yields axial ratio bandwidth of 43 MHz (4.67%) that lies fully within VSWR bandwidth of 106 MHz (11.43%). The antenna exhibits broadside pattern and shows 8 dBi peak gain across impedance and axial ratio bandwidth. With the realized antenna characteristics, proposed design can find applications in mobile communication systems in 900 MHz frequency spectrum.
