Abstract
This chapter examines the extent and nature of labour market engagement of the aged in Eastern India. The sample is drawn from a primary survey of aged respondents in three cities of Eastern India: Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Ranchi.
The study estimates workforce participation of the respondents, nature of employment, and their gross financial contribution to their households. It also estimates the indirect economic contribution of the aged, in terms of undertaking household chores—an aspect that has been rarely examined in the Indian context. The type of household tasks performed, frequency with which they are performed, and gender variations in such activities are analysed. Although the imputed economic value of such activities may be considerable, there has been no attempt to impute value to such tasks. The current study attempts this exercise, and uses the results to estimate total net contribution of aged to their families.
