Abstract

The air source heat pump (ASHP) system was a substitute for fossil fuels for space heating. But in cold climate, some problems that high discharge temperature, low heating capacity and the coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump water heaters limited its wider application. In this paper, a two-stage scroll compression air source heat pump (TSCASHP) system coupled with dual-cylinder scroll compressor was developed, and the heating performance under low ambient temperature was quantitatively evaluated. The experiment was conducted under a variety of ambient temperatures. The internal parameters of temperature and pressure were analyzed to evaluate the heating performance of the system. Test results showed that the system could provide reliable and stable heating at low ambient temperature. The system could generate hot water of 41 °C in the extreme low temperature of −18 °C with the COP of 2.10. By analyzing internal parameters of the system, the mass flow rate was considered the main influencing factor of system operation at low ambient temperature. This study extended the operating range of ASHP system and also provided experimental basis and technical support for clean heating projects in cold regions.
