Abstract

The thermodynamic properties obtained from the fundamental equations of thermodynamics through first and second derivatives of a fundamental equation of thermodynamics are mathematically related to each other and thus are not independent. One of the most useful types of relations is the Maxwell relations which relate thermodynamic properties represented by mixed second derivatives of a fundamental energy or entropy function with respect to two variables belonging to different conjugate variable pairs, i.e., the coupled properties between thermal, mechanical, and chemical variables in a simple system.
