Abstract

The operation of all energy conversion devices utilizes differences in a type of thermodynamic potential such as a difference in temperature, pressure, chemical potential, electric potential, or gravitational potential. This chapter discusses the maximum work theorem, maximum device energy conversion efficiency, and basic principles of electrochemical energy conversion.
