Abstract

The relative stability of possible equilibrium phases in a material can be determined from the knowledge of their chemical potentials as a function of temperature and pressure. This chapter will mainly discuss the determination of the relative stability of possible equilibrium states of a material with respect to temperature and pressure at a fixed chemical composition and the representation of the stable equilibrium states on diagrams called phase diagrams.
