Abstract

In this chapter, work on planar antenna with ultra-wideband characteristics and micromachined antenna is detailed. Recent advances in this antenna technology pave a new way for future applications in space, defense, RADAR, or in various ground-based wireless system (Schantz in Art and science of ultra-wideband antennas. Artech House Publication, 2005). key component of this system is front-end antenna. It acts as an electronic eye of the whole assembly. Maintaining the desired return losses (better than 10 dB) over a wide frequency range (3.1–10.6 GHz) is the main challenge of such system without interfering any existing technologies. Numerous versions of UWB antennas have been reported. But, planar one is getting maximum popularity because of its low-profile and lightweight features (Liang et al. in IEEE Trans. Antennas Propag. 53(11):3500–3504, 2005). Following Sect. 4.1 describes in detail, the development of such a planar antenna on silicon substrate. This antenna is having band-notched characteristics for certain bands which are already being used in wireless field. The next subsection 4.2 demonstrates development of a silicon micromachined antenna array structure. Effect of various fabrication\tolerances has been detailed for better understanding.
