Abstract
One common interest among ASEAN member states is founded on the fact that the region has been endowed with abundant and diverse natural resources. Consequently, numerous challenges have arisen surrounding environmental conservation and sustainable development. It is the objective of this chapter to consider these key challenges and to lay down some ideas for consideration as ASEAN marches forward as an economic community. This chapter looks at the history and the various efforts that have been undertaken by ASEAN towards dealing with existing environmental challenges. It also outlines existing legal and policy considerations that ASEAN has taken in response to the three key environmental challenges identified, starting with the challenges surrounding energy. The chapter then discusses the challenges surrounding deforestation and the effects of climate change. It concludes with some possible consideration for the future.
