New Information Systems Supporting the Emotional Aspect of Care

This chapter explores digitalization and services from the perspective of care, focusing on professional care in hospitals. After an overview of digitalization of healthcare, a project to develop a digital information system for nurses in a Japanese hospital is introduced. It serves as a case study of the challenges of digitalization in the context of caring practices where the emotional needs of those receiving and, significantly, providing care are central. The chapter argues that current Electronic Medical Records do not sufficiently allow for nurses to express their “caring mind”; thus, this should be a focus of further research.
