Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Protection and Community Engagement in South Asia

Abstract

Hussain introduces the centrality of local communities in the preservation of intangible heritage by focusing on the community, culture and heritage nexus. Approaching intangible heritage as the cultural practices and living patterns of communities, this chapter explores the importance of preserving heritage landscapes in the aftermath of crisis, conflicts and disasters. It introduces a participatory mapping project in post-disaster areas in northern Pakistan and illustrates how local communities can be involved in the process of documenting and preserving their own intangible heritage landscapes.
