Abstract

The relationship between children and urban space has become a relevant topic in scientific research, having an important impact in the field of social relations and public policy. Based on Urban Sociology and Sociology of Childhood assumptions, this chapter considers urban space as a product and producer of social life and children as competent social actors. Through an ethnographic and participatory case study in the suburbs of Maputo (Mozambique), multiple forms of mobility and circulation that children practice between different spaces of the city are investigated. Results show how children’s identities and lives are created and recreated through the use and appropriation of spaces where their everyday lives take place.
