Energy-Efficient WSN Using Membership Handshaking Clustering Technique for Isolated Nodes

Clustering algorithms are most suitable energy-efficient algorithms for prolonging nodes’ lifetime in wireless sensor network. Cluster heads are responsible to generate clusters of sensor nodes. While forming clusters, some nodes are not able to communicate with cluster head. This makes them isolated from network. Such isolated node consumes extra energy to communicate with sink node and generates additional overhead. This paper proposes a new energy-efficient clustering technique with isolated node (EEC-IN) which overcomes node isolation issue. In EEC-IN, during cluster formation isolated node follows our novel membership handshaking method with nearer cluster head node. This technique reduces networking traffic load and prolongs lifetime of network. Simulation results show that proposed technique improves network lifetime more efficiently than existing techniques.
