Abstract

The hypopharynx extends from the level of the hyoid bone to inferiorly the cervical oesophagus at lower border of cricoid cartilage. Tumours arising from the hypopharynx are generally aggressive and present late partly because of few symptoms. Most patients have lymph node metastasis at presentation and generally have worse prognosis as compared with ‘intrinsic’ laryngeal tumours. Smoking and alcohol consumption are important factors in aetiology [1].
