Abstract

Learner analysis is the process of identifying who our learners are. In learner analysis, the instructional designer tries to identify the demographics of the intended learners, their prior knowledge and specific characteristics or attributes. It is arguably the most critical component of instructional design. It largely determines instructional design as it provides a profile of the intended learners so that the instruction can result in meaningful learning. This is especially true when high-stakes contexts involve a high level of risk, and unproductive learning and instruction may lead to adverse impacts on real-world decision making. In this chapter, we discuss the types of learner characteristics to analyse and the strategies to apply when conducting learner analysis in targeted contexts.
