Rectangular Hollow Metallic Waveguides and Resonators

This chapter is devoted to rectangular hollow metallic waveguides and cavity resonators. Here, the classification of waveguide modes based on longitudinal components of EM field is given together with Helmholtz’s equations, their solutions and calculations, EM characteristics of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, and dispersion characteristics. Losses in waveguide both in dielectric fillings and in its metallic walls are considered further on. The schematic sectional view of TE10 and TM11 is also given. The author then compares EM processes occurring in the cavity resonators with the ones in the waveguides. The schematic sectional view of TE101 and TM111 is presented alongside with the excitation of waveguides and resonators by probes, loops, and slots.
