Analysis on the Cause of the Defects of the Weld Seam in a Butt Welded Flange Ring

  • 217 Accesses

Abstract

The causes of the crack formation were analyzed by macroscopic analysis, ultrasonic testing, chemical composition analysis, metallographic analysis, and energy spectrum analysis. The result shows that the cracks originate between the welding consumables and the base metal and both ends were smoothed and expanded along the circumferential direction of the weld. The residual coating of the slag in the weld and the non-fusion defect between the layers are the internal causes of the formation of the crack. Weld cracks are caused by improper control of welding parameters.
