Massification of Higher Education in China: Problems and Solutions

Abstract

Massification of higher education in China has led to a quick increase in student enrolment, in the number of universities and in the size of universities, which has given students more opportunities for higher education. However, this increase has also led to problems in the division of the different types and functions of universities. Consequentially, it has produced a whole series of problems like the gap between the development of higher education and the economic structure and societal demands. This paper intends to analyse the existing problems which are characteristic of the development mode and to discuss the proposed suggestions and measures to solve the problems. The paper ends with a positive prediction that, with efforts from the Chinese government and other actors, problems in massification of higher education in China will be gradually solved.
