Abstract
Pulses form an integral component of the farming system in India because of their vital role in nutritional security and sustainable agriculture. Chickpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, urdbean, lentil and peas are the major pulses grown under wide range of agroclimatic conditions in India. Among the various insect pests, gram pod borer is the key pest of chickpea and pigeonpea, while pod fly is the second major pest of pigeonpea. Thrips, whitefly and Bihar hairy caterpillar inflict damage in mungbean and urdbean. Stem fly and pod borer were found to damage field pea and black aphid in lentil. These insect pests are the major biotic constraints in achieving the self-sufficiency for ensuring food security. In order to bring down the huge losses caused by insect pests in pulses, effective integrated pest management modules have been developed and recommended to the farmers.
