Pests and Their Management

Abstract

Banana ranks first in production and second among fruits grown in India. Banana is gaining importance in the nontraditional areas due to its significance in the domestic and export market. Banana is grown in different systems of cultivation, viz. homestead or backyard cultivation, mixed cultivation and pure crop cultivation. Pest and disease pressures have increased considerably in the recent years, and they are major constraints to banana production system in our country. Prominently, banana was affected by banana corm weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar), banana stem weevil (Odoiporus longicollis ( Oliver), aphid and scarring beetle including 30 species of key insect pests.
