Abstract
Microbial organisms are sub-microscopic infective organisms that usually produce diseases. They are subdivided into (1) bacteria, (2) fungi, (3) protozoa, (4) helminths and (5) virus. It is not always possible to identify the microbes by routine haematoxylin and eosin stain, and often special stains are required to demonstrate the morphology and characteristic colour of the organisms. This chapter describes the essential stains to demonstrate the various microorganisms in the histopathology and cytology material. The principle of stains, basic ingredients of the staining solution and the steps of staining have been described here.
