Abstract

Chapter  4, “Language and Writing,” was written by Wang Yuanyuan and has been translated by Qiu Qingqing. After a historical delineation of the Chinese language and its various writing systems, the chapter is devoted primarily to modern developments and the current state of the Chinese language and writing systems, with special attention given to detailed descriptions of Mandarin Chinese, various dialects, writing system reforms, minority languages, and ethnic language policies.
