Abstract
Arecoline is extracted from Areca catechu L., and it is the most important alkaloid in it. Arecoline has the effect of antiparasite and is promoting the motility of the gastrointestinal smooth muscle. It activates the M and N cholinergic receptors, excites the nervous system, promotes the body excitability, and improves the ability of learning and memory. The application of arecoline is rare at present mainly due to its adverse effects. However, as an important traditional Chinese medicine, areca still has important value in clinical practice, especially in compatibility of herbs.
