Protocatechualdehyde is a kind of phenolic acid compound extracted from roots of the common traditional Chinese medicine Salvia miltiorrhiza. Protocatechualdehyde is an important pharmaceutical intermediate, which could be used to synthesize many kinds of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Protocatechualdehyde has wide pharmacological activities including anti-atherosclerosis, myocardial protection, antithrombosis, neuroprotection, antisepsis, antiviral, and anti-fibrosis. In clinical therapy, it is used to treat coronary heart disease, chest tightness, angina, and so on.
