Abstract

Gender-based violence occurs throughout the world and across different cultures; yet despite the attention and multiple interventions, it continues unabated. Gender-based violence occurs throughout the world across different cultures and despite the attention and multiple interventions, it continues unabated. Namibia is no exception and gender-based violence has taken on epidemic proportions in recent years. Traditional interventions are not working and underlying cultural issues need to be taken into consideration if a societal change is desired. We set up a cultured interactive installation to prompt people to reflect deeper and hopefully change attitudes towards gender-based violence. The Tales of Nali technology hut incorporates physical properties simulating a traditional African hut with traditional artefacts, videos and an interactive role-playing application. The hut serves as data collection tool and thought stimulator. Participants interact with privacy and feelings of home are designed to stimulate reflection about gender-based violence within a cultural setting.
