Abstract
Data collection for this study occurred over a five-month period beginning in November 2013 and ending in March 2014. Information was collected from the curricula vitae of the school-level leaders of 39 colleges and universities included in Project 985, 76 colleges and universities included in Project 211 (but not in Project 985), 764 ordinary colleges, and 287 independent colleges and universities. A total of 7796 curricula vitae were collected for school leaders, yielding a maximum sample size of 6765 (the number of valid responses with the highest response rate) after excluding invalid data, such as missing names, missing gender information, and missing positions. The information obtained was divided into five sections: basic information, educational background, academic background, international experience, work experience, and promotion method. Overall, 15 specific indicators, which comprehensively reflect the characteristics of college leaders, were examined.
