Abstract
Communication of adequate and appropriate hazardous material information to all stakeholders in workplace is important since it is a key element of safety and health. This information can be obtained from sources such as Material Safety Data Sheets but many workers find incomprehensibility due to descriptive nature or unknown language. To address this problem, a Hazardous Material Information System (HMIS) is developed with minimum basic hazardous information communicated using semi-descriptive language and standardized labels and symbols, which provides easier understanding of physical and health hazards, first aid treatment, PPE, extinguishing media, HMIS rating to the stakeholders. Due to lack of basic education and unfamiliarity with safety symbols, many workers find difficulty in understanding the simplified HMIS template. Multimedia HMIS (MHMIS) is a computerized hazard communication system, which focuses on easier communication and longer recall of information. This has been attained with the help of computerized software, which uses audio in various languages that workers understand information to be communicated, and visuals that are self-explanatory to improve hazard communicability among stakeholders in the industry. In this case, both HMIS and MHMIS have been developed for Star Paper Mills Pvt. Ltd., Saharanpur (Paper and Pulp Manufacturing industry) and the levels of hazard comprehensibility at different stages of the study are compared to know about effectiveness of techniques.
