Abstract

This introduction to The Catholic Church in Taiwan: Birth, Growth and Development covers the whole volume presenting research into relevant facets of history, politics, international relations, sociology, education and tourism, and serving as a groundbreaking work. Following the historical introduction, the time span of the study is from the 1950s to the present. The theme of the whole volume explains the external influences which have had their impact on the development of the contemporary Taiwan Church. Thus the chapters focus on evaluating, through the lens of the social sciences and the humanities, the interactions between Taiwan Catholics and other players in religious organizations outside its boundary, namely with those in the Catholic Church in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, sovereign states (the Vatican, Japan and Mainland China) as well as with the government of Taiwan.
