Abstract

The objective is to examine the influence of excavation construction on an adjacent retained excavation and to determine the safe spacing between them. Firstly, the variation of the earth pressure acting on the retaining walls due to adjacent unloading was studied based on the limit equilibrium theory and the assumption of plane slip. Then, the expression of the safe spacing b between two adjacent excavations is discussed theoretically. Secondly, a parametric study was carried out by finite element method simulations to study the influence of the depth of excavation, the spacing between two excavations, the soil strength, and the surcharge on soil surface between two adjacent excavations. The proposed earth pressure and the recommend expression of the safe spacing by Eq. (6) are evaluated. Suggestions are also given for the sake of safety control for two adjacent excavations.
