Abstract
Belongingness is a fundamental human need. A sense of belonging to the school, in particular, underpins the social and emotional needs of young people. Research clearly indicates how important belonging is to both children and adults, but its application is neither simple nor straightforward. In this introductory chapter, we offer a preliminary discussion of school belonging and provide an overview of the chapters contained within this book. Combining a deep investigation into the research with practical applications, we hope that this book will empower educators to help young people foster a sense of belonging and truly thrive.
