Abstract
To accommodate and resolve the problems associated with rapid urbanization, the Government of China has attached great importance to the development of intelligent city. This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction of intelligent city construction in China, including the smart city initiatives in China since 2012 and the institutions involved ranging from national level to local level, the characteristics and categories of intelligent city construction modes in China, as well as the technological requirements and critical technologies in building intelligent city system. Overall, the Intelligent city construction in China is growing vigorously and the construction of many cities involves many concepts such as Internet of Things, ubiquitous network and cloud platform, which have been interpreted by experts from various angles. However, it is undeniable that most people still lack deep understanding about how these terms should be applied in specific construction, so eventually, all constructions tend to be similar and lack breakthrough. Given that China intelligent city construction is still at primary stage with many problems and challenges to be overcome, intelligent city construction in China is suggested to be promoted in three steps gradually at the end of this chapter.
