Abstract
Doctors are leaders of healthcare teams and their leadership inpacts on the performance and outcomes of the team. They are highly trained and are the most expensive labour category in healthcare. In addition they control a large part of healthcare expenditure with their decision making including admitting and discharging decisions, treatment decisions including procedures, medications and devices as well as decisions about the setting of care. It is critical therefore that health services contract or employ well trained doctors who are equipped to provide high quality care and ensure their work environment supports their education, training, continued professional development and wellbeing. This chapter provides the reader with basic information on the key aspects of medical workforce management in a hospital setting.
