Etiology of Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract

Alcohol is one of the factors frequently associated with chronic pancreatitis; its frequency is lower than that previously reported and heavy alcohol consumption and smoking habit are two independent risk factors for this disease. Autoimmune pancreatitis accounts for 2–4% of all forms of chronic pancreatitis, but this frequency will probably increase over the next few years. There has also been a rise in idiopathic chronic pancreatitis around the world. Despite the progress made to date regarding the discovery of the hereditary forms of chronic pancreatitis and the detection of autoimmune pancreatitis, there are more inaccuracies in identifying the factors associated with chronic pancreatitis.
