Abstract
Residential networks are becoming increasingly rich in devices and applications, but continue to share the broadband link in a neutral way. These devices (and the services accessed via them) are of varying utility to a user—for example, a video streaming session may be more critical than a software update. The lack of service differentiation often leads to poor quality of experience (QoE) for users and subsequently affects content providers (CPs) revenue. On the other hand, households keep generating unprecedented amount of traffic that leads to an economic problem for ISPs—widening the gap between cost and revenue. Going forward, the most promising way for ISPs to generate new revenue stream is by tapping into the service quality dimension for differentiation and fast-lane offerings that can be monetized from content providers.
