Abstract
The pneumatic tire is a representative rubber product that has been crucial to the success of the automotive industry. A tire has four design elements: shape, construction, pattern, and material. Various aspects of tire performance are to be simultaneously satisfied by appropriately combining the four elements. In this chapter, a historical review relating to tires is given first, followed by discussions on engineering design of the four design elements. The future trend of tires is foretold based on the relationships between tire performances and tire design elements. Future tires may differ from currently available pneumatic tires in order to satisfy both the safety of all the relevant persons including the driver and the environmental performances (e.g., skid resistance, noise, rolling resistance and wear of tires). Development of the tires to be equipped to the future automobiles may necessitate a much deeper understanding of the technological phenomena even at nanometer levels.
