Abstract

This chapter outlines the prolonged history of religion and religiosity in Indonesia by discussing the concept of agama as background for studying the state and religion relationship in modern Indonesia. It considers the nature of agama in Indonesian culture and how state policies on religion paved the foundation of more complex problem of the state–religion relationship in modern Indonesia.
