Abstract
The following Introduction establishes the foundation of the research and is presented in five sections. The first section explains the title and especially two key concepts in the title, ‘tale’ and ‘missed opportunities’. Also noted are the four aims of the research. In the second section, six general terms associated with the research are defined. The key terms are Continuing Professional Education (CPE) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Next the features of CPE are explained to provide an appreciation of the special and idiosyncratic nature of the field. An important aspect of this section is the support of three assumptions: that CPE is accepted as a field of educational provision, that it is a cross-professions activity (not perceived only as an activity of individual professions) and that it is the third stage of professional education. The third section provides an extension of the comments on the use of the term ‘tale’ by noting the role and perceptions of the writer in relation to CPE. The fourth section outlines the research process developed to gather the data on Australia’s CPE. Finally, the structure of the presentation in four Parts is explained.
