Abstract

This essay gives a brief history of pediatric rheumatology. Pediatric rheumatology is one of the youngest medical specialties. Although, several authors including Still, Diamant-Berger and Cornil had published articles and monographs on various aspects of rheumatic diseases in children during the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the formal inauguration of the specialty took place in 1976. That is when the American College of Rheumatology (which was known at that time as American Rheumatism Association) sponsored a conference on pediatric rheumatic diseases at Park City, USA. The pioneers who attended that conference collected all the available information on the subject and compiled them into a monograph [1]. This became the core knowledge and foundation for the establishment of pediatric rheumatology.
