Abstract

Plant biodiversity is one of the gifts that nature has offered to mankind. Only 30 crop species provide 95 % of the world’s food requirement though over 7000 species have been known to be used for food. Many neglected and underutilized plants are extremely important for food production especially in Low Income Food Deficient Countries keeping in view the global food security and malnutrition. Underutilized crops are those that once grown rapidly and intensely but later lagged behind the conventional major crops for variety of agronomic, economic and cultural reasons. Global food security and economic growth are being threatened by declining number of plant species. Agricultural advancement and food security depend on our ability to broaden the agricultural species ranges in an effective ways. India represents about 11 % of world’s flora though having only 2.4 % of the total landmass. Indian region is considered as one of the rich center of diversity which can be utilized as gene source of useful trait. The gradually emerging threat of world-wide food shortage compelled different national and international organizations to explore the underutilized crops of potential, to monitor and promote research, control the germplasm management, exchange and domestication.
