Abstract

During the reign of the Qing dynasty, the policy of “Zhong Nong Yi Shang” (encouraging agriculture and restraining commerce) was continued. The bud of capitalism in China’s south-east coast areas was stifled because of the banning of marine trade which was carried out from the late Southern Song dynasty to the beginning of the Ming dynasty.
