Abstract
August 15, 1945. The echo of the two bombs reached the far hamlets of the Japanese Archipelago 6 days after Nagasaki. The village doctor, farmers, trades people, students in ‘kinro-hohshi’ (labor service), and soldiers in uniform all huddled around the radio set to catch the ‘important announcement.’ Finally the shaky but occasionally firm voice of the Emperor came on the air, a first for the Japanese people for whom he was considered a Living God.
