Abstract
Jayanthakumaran offers a much-needed summary of the rapid pace of urbanization, urban poverty, and inequality in Asia. The chapter also draws attention to three important conclusions: the appropriateness of poverty measures; the importance of the absolute number of people relative to the head count (HC) ratio; and the importance of reducing urban inequality to reduce urban poverty. As well as looking at ways in which poverty is measured, Jayanthakumaran highlights the interlink between poverty and factors such as demographic imbalance, infrastructure deficiencies, and environmental degradation. The conclusion is that research on interdependencies between poverty and urbanization-related issues in Asia are still in their infancy and require further investigation.
