Abstract

By critically engaging with empirical data collected from the context of China during the period when China has hosted two grand international events – the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai – this chapter explores to what extent are these young Chinese women interested in politics and national/international events and their view of citizen in the 21st century? I present my participants’ perceptions on the self in relation to the nation, and explain how Chinese feminist desires and national imaginations in broader terms are reflected upon these promising young Chinese women’s subjectivities. My goal is to discover the process of women’s political participation and citizenship awareness in the Chinese context.
