Abstract
This study aims to explore the health status of caregivers of impaired older persons aged 60 and over; and the roles of family and social support in long-term care. Data are obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 348 caregivers looking after impaired adults aged 60 and over. The study finds significant differences between male and female caregivers. During the month prior to the interview, women were suffering more from both mental and physical problems than men. Family and social networks boost the level of subjective well-being and enhance coping. Due to its sensitivity as a public policy issue, action research is recommended that not only involves different stakeholders but also can enhance the well-being of the older adults. Community-based research can highlight the needs of both caregivers and care recipients. The study recommends special technical training as a necessity for improving long-term caregiving for impaired older persons aged 60 and above.
