Abstract

Soltani examines the strategies and tactics used in Canada’s liberal democratic framework to normalize covert forms of racism. She begins by outlining the manifestations of covert racism in mainstream discourse by highlighting the main tenets of democratic racism. This will help illustrate how the myth of the American Dream is needed in popular discourse in order to maintain and legitimize democratic racism. She then examines how the discourse of individualism within the American Dream encourages an ahistorical and decontextualized account of the past.
