Abstract
In spite of high levels of unemployment, the poor have always found innovative ways to cope with the demands of daily existence in urban communities in South Africa. Stokvels – collective savings among groups of people in order to have access to larger sums of money when needed – are the most basic form of economic solidarity among the working class.
